It was time that Kevin Durant made his decision on which college he wanted to attend. Russell Springmann, an assistant at the University of Texas had a major influence on Durant’s decision. He had been talking and staying in touch with Durant since his first year in high school. Also, for Texas Longhorn and LA Laker, Maurice Evans trained with Kevin to furthermore persuade him to sign with Texas. Durant committed and became a Longhorn.

Texas’s coach Rick Barnes told Kevin that he had a good shot at starting for the Longhorns as a freshman coming in. He also let Durant know that he would be most likely be in the national spotlight at the end of the season. After realizing in just a few months how talented Kevin Durant was, Coach Barnes reconsidered his decision of designing plays for Kevin. He noticed that Kevin created scoring opportunities not only for himself, but for his teammates. Mid-way through the season everyone begin to see Durant as the best offensive college player in the nation.

KD averaged 26 points and 11 rebounds a game while playing for the Longhorns. Kevin also made history by recording 390 rebounds as a freshman in one season, third most in NCAA history. Kevin poured in nearly 26 points a night and grabbed 11 rebounds. In all, he posted 20 30-point games, and his 390 boards were third-most by a freshman in NCAA history. At the end of March, he was named the AP College Player of the Year. He also won the Naismith and Wooden awards. Kevin was successful enough to get the Longhorns in the NCAA Tournament. However they did not get too far. They only made it past the first round and lost in the second to USC. After only one season with Texas, Kevin Durant decided to enter the NBA draft. He was drafted second overall to the Seattle Supersonics.
